Soldiers of Fortune: Jet Black Edition
A downloadable wargame
“If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.”
~ Howard Tayler
Soldiers of Fortune is a ruleset that allows players of OnePageRules (a fantastic wargame not made by me) to control a Company of Mercenaries and take on procedurally generated Contracts to fight the powers at be.
Soldiers of Fortune (which is made by me) is compatible with both Age of Fantasy: Skirmish and Grimdark Future: Firefight, allowing you to play in either setting without issue.
This is not an official expansion or anything, consider it a "fan game".
The Core Rules include:
- Rules for creating and maintaining a unique Mercenary Company, based in a faction from either OPR's Age of Fantasy or Grimdark Future, without being entirely tied to just that faction
- A 5-step process for procedurally generating Contracts (missions you can go on to get paid)
- An AI Decision-Making System that does not rely on decision trees and takes into account Player input without slowing down the game (heavily based on Space Weirdos by Garske Games)
- Rules for Enemy Garrisons, Reinforcements, Command Squads, Monstrosities, and Wizards/Psychics
- An improved Injury and Experience system that encourages the growth of elite mercenary bands
- Several Company Staff you can earn that provide passive bonuses
- A sheet for tracking your Company's Attributes, Staff, Rapport with other Factions, and your Roster of Mercs
- Much, much more, the full text is 24 pages long
What's New in the Jet Black Edition?
- Much better formatting for a higher quality of life
- Smaller files, includes both single page and two-page spread options
- Rapport, a new mechanic that allows for developing storylines between factions and the Company
- Consolidation of a lot of disparate ideas into a solid core
- A hyperlinked table of contents
You may also notice there is a lot of empty space, this is where I plan for ART to go! Assuming I continue to get some occasional funding, I'd love to take Soldiers of Fortune to the next level and have print editions with full art! For now, they are simply blank spaces, but know that there are plans for the impossible to become a reality!

Oh hell yeah, this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Out of curiosity do the rules also apply to Grimdark Future: Warfleets?
Could you use them for warfleets? Probably, it would not require significant tweaking to have them functional, however, I don’t think it would be super balanced. What did you have in mind narratively?
Finally getting around to replying!
My thinking was establishing something like a space station that would serve as a hub for going through a system. Building up a fleet of ships as part of your mercenary company!
