Humanity hides in sheltered villages.

Monsters prowl the wilderness.

You are the few foolish enough to leave safety.

Find your fortunes in the dungeon.

And try not to die.

For 2-200 players. The best plans do not always involve dice.

This game is part of the OSR

It includes rules for :

  • 14 enemies, with each one, has 6 subtypes
  • 36 feats, to better allow for unique characters in this classless, game system
  • Exploring dungeons, in a similar vein to the rest of the OSR
  • Building up warbands, and constructing fortifications to fight wars and fend off invading armies
  • 16 spells, spirits of elemental energy, locked away in grimoires, arcane prisons that take the form of massive, elaborate books of incantations, imagery, and udder gibberish
  • A system for handling social encounters and intimidation
  • Putting together adventurescampaigns, and factions in conflict
  • Character sheetscondition pieces, an arts-and-crafts inventory system, and a soon to be an expansive catalog of dungeons, adventures, and things to do

Beyond the Core Rules

Attached to the Crowns Core Rules are a set of supplementary documents to help you run the game more effectively!

  • Fully illustrated character sheets (small enough to print out two on a single page)
  • Fully illustrated companion sheets (small enough to print out four on a single page)
  • Condition cards with all the information needed about them on the card (recommended these are printed on different colored paper than the items)
  • Blank and pre-illustrated item cards for players to use over the course of play
  • A GM session tracker sheet for keeping play organized
  • Easy printable rules reference sheets for quick start play and reference during play (small enough for two on a single page)

What makes this game different?

  • A unique combat system, highly encouraging secondary actions alongside generic attacks, allowing for essentially "back-up" actions in case a player attack misses
  • A simple monster system using one attribute for all rolls to cement a monster's power level, and has simple rules for monsters that are "beyond the scope of 4 adventurers" and require greater forces to deal with (like dragons)
  • An advancement system that encourages the spending of money recklessly (and rewards players for it)
  • A healing system that takes time to recover from grievous wounds, making games take longer and appear more realistic, however, not limiting players to bed rest during their recovery time. They can still get things done in that time, such as dig for leadsdo researchcommission masterwork itemshave magic item's identified, spend time relaxing (gives benefits on the next leave of town), and others

Buying vs. Free

All the game's Core Rules and all of the Supplementary Documents are totally free, with the exception that the art throughout the Core Rules is reserved for paid copies only. Along with this, you will also gain access to all the pre-drawn item icons pre-separated for use in your own games (or really whatever you'd like)!

I’ll update the link, here’s the new one

Does the physical copy include PDFs?

Yes, it’s just buying the PDFs and tipping an extra $10 for the physical.

(+1)

quick question: will you ever do a bundle with all Crowns material? i notice you've got a lot!

(+1)

I will once the two final Crowns books come out (the complete Season of Crows and a setting book called “Where the Wind Bites Like Steel”). Then, all the Crowns 1st Edition planned books will be done!

I should institute some sales soon though, I always forget about those -.-

awesome! i might jump in then, so cool. thanks for this, i'll try keeping a lookout.

any chance for any community copies to pop up?

Probably not, for the Core Rules. The rules are all free, all you’re paying for is the art, no extra content. However, I could probably get some community copies together for some other of my games/expansions, I just gotta figure out how to do it, lol.

all good, was just curious! will throw some vibes your way soon. game looks so nice 🤓

Thank you so much! Your comment is probably the push I needed to add community copies to like… Season of Crows for example, lol. So it was helpful :P

Is there an updated link to the Discord

Hey, just found the game recently and it's great! I have a rules question: I'm kind of confused about long resting and sleep. It says long resting does not count as sleep in terms of travel exhaustion, but the condition cards say a long rest gets rid of exhaustion. So if you were exhausted, spent 3 watches traveling, and spent the fourth long resting (but NOT sleeping), would you just immediately lose the Exhausted Condition and gain it right back?

Hmm, a very solid loophole. I’d say no, and would probably compound back to back days without sleeping by adding an additional exhaustion condition for each. So like, 2 days without sleeping gives 2 exhaustion, ect.

Thank you for the kind words!!!

On page 22 under "Resolve & Defiance" it says, "When a bloodied monster takes critical damage, and the attacking player succeeds on a VIT save minus the amount of damage dealt over the monster’s resolve, the monster loses 1 defiance (DEF)" is this supposed to be VIT save plus amount of damage? If not, that means a player with 15 VIT that deals 12 damage has to roll a 3 or less to remove a DEF, while a player with the same VIT doing 1 damage will only need to roll a 14 or less.

Also, on page 43 it says "fully charged grimoire" but later says cost is halved for each "dot unchanged". Was also wondering if this is also a typo?

Those were typos. Thank you so much for your feedback!

I’m posting the final version of the text either today or tomorrow, final for printing reasons. I had caught that first typo a few days ago, but the second one would have gone right under my nose! Thank you so much for reading closely!

On followers sheets under Beast of Burden, it says "If saddlebags are added, unlock 2, 3, 4, and 5. Top slots now only count for 1 and 4"
Shouldn't it be "unlock 2, 3, 5, and 6"? Confused me for a few seconds, although it's easy to infer the rule.

Haven't read through the system, but looks at least somewhat interesting. It's great that you've created different worksheets for various subsystems, I think it's something sorely lacking in most RPG publications.

Yes! I’ll try to get that changed today! Thank you for your feedback 😊

Is it called Crowns or Hamlet of Heroes?

It says the latter in the PDF.

(1 edit)

What page? I’ll change that asap! It’s Crowns, it used to be HoH

Edit: Never mind, found it, I can’t believe I missed that! The change will be included in the next update after a few more bugs can be found that way they’re all wrapped up together. Thank you, and if you find any more errors let me know!
