2/14/2025 - Beast-Kin!

Introducing New Monsters

Beast-Kin are the “humanoids” of the Crowns universe. I always felt that the word “humanoid” felt too sci-fi, I don’t think medieval/renaissance people would have used it.

Here’s the first spread of two devoted to these baddies.

Most of the information I’ve used to build the stat-blocks for these guys have been from the AD&D Monster Manual by TSR and the Monster Overhaul by Skerples. If I’m totally lost though, I’ll consult the 4th Ed Monster Manual by Wizards of the Coast. It has a ton of good ideas for one-off abilities that make one group of monsters different from the rest of their compatriots.

Monster Fighting Stylers

One of the big things I’ve been really trying to focus on is having a monster for every type of style. With animals this was difficult, there weren’t a lot of Manipulator or Tormentor animals. However, with Beast-Kin I can spread my wings a bit. The six classic “grunt” Beast-Kin are:

  • Goblins
  • Harpies
  • Kobolds
  • Lizardkin
  • Morlocks
  • Orcs

At least, those are the one’s for Crowns. I find myself writing them into most of my adventures when I need minions to a dark master that aren’t generic cultists. Each of those six has a different fighting style.

  • Goblin (Manipulator)
  • Harpy (Tormentor)
  • Kobold (Skirmisher)
  • Lizardkin (Lurker)
  • Morlock (Warrior)
  • Orc (Protector)

Remember, these fighting styles really only come into play when a monster is Elite or Solo. Most of these guys won’t be, but the one’s that are will fight that way. Elite goblins (Hobgoblins) are crafty, elite harpies are shrieking ear-splitting cries, elite orcs are usually sergeants and captains using tactics with their troops, etc.
